Walmart:

Long-time Manager Tom Kehres Focuses BG Walmart on Serving the Community

Walmart has 5,000 stores open across the nation, according to the company’s web site, and one of those is located at 131 W. Gypsy Lane Road here in Bowling Green. Yes, it’s a big company, but for BG store manager Tom Kehres, his focus is on making his store community-oriented and a vibrant part of Bowling Green. “We really try to keep the college student in mind,” says Bowling Green Kehres. “We pursue Bowling Green State University clothing every year.

We want students and just general fans to have access to BGSU related things that are not as expensive as some of the other places that sell them.”

The Bowling Green Walmart has an entire section within their clothing display dedicated to different types and styles of Bowling Green State University (BGSU) apparel.

“A lot of (Walmart) stores get two or three racks of whatever college they pick, but we see that department as an opportunity, especially in August and September. For the past few years I’ve even tried to keep it for the whole year just because it does do very well for us and I think people enjoy it. Because a good portion of our customers are students, we put merchandise towards that,” Kehres said.

The store manager has become a fixture of the local community, as Kehres has just entered his 16th year working for the Bowling Green Walmart as store manager. He began his career in retail working for Hills Department Stores, who have since closed, before moving over to the Walmart in Findlay, located about 30 minutes south of Bowling Green. Kehres began working for Walmart in Bowling Green Jan. 1, 2000, and has had no desire to work anywhere else.

“We’re always taking suggestions. If somebody wishes to see something for sale here I want to hear about it. I want this store to serve its customers in the best way it possibly can.”
